It’s great! A core i5 will generally have Windows 7, and if not Windows XP, so you’ll be all right. Since this is all you are using it for, I might go for a less expensive laptop to cover software costs.

Question by Scoop111: I took my computer in for repair and they said it had a virus called Spector Pro. What is this? How to remove?
They wanted 9 to clear my system of that virus. I can’t find info about it online. Can someone tell me what it is? Is it dangerous? Can I get rid of it myself?

Answer by Austin Semiconductor
Spector Pro is spyware that someone installed on your PC, to spy on users. It monitors keystrokes, logs web pages used, chat conversations, passwords etc.
Someone intentionally installed program to spy on the users of the PC. It is not free.
Check for other un-install methods first, like such as that posted by PEACE! below. If you can just un-install it, that would be the easiest. But that might not be an option if you dont know the password.
Do a google search for: Spector Pro remove
I am blocked from many of those web sites by my providers filter. So I cant give more details. Be sure your turn on your fishing filter in IE7, and firewall before searching those sites.
Some of them may be hacked.
I have IE6 so I cant walk you through that, but it is easy.
One other more drastic way around the problem ( maybe), would be to check your system restore feature, and see if you can un-install the software by restoring the PC to an earlier configuration.
Any software that you installed after the selected restore date, would have to be re-installed. ( games, updates, security fixes, SPYWARE etc).
The restore feature, can be reversed, by re-running the tool.
in Xp:
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, system restore.
(*) Restore my computer to an earlier time.
Next
Then look at all of the available restore dates in the popup canendar. Try to choose a date before the spyware was installed, but not too far back. Then follow the prompts.
If you dont like the changes, just re-run the tool to undo the changes.
You might also consider Changing your password, and admin password, delete the other user accounts, and activate a screensaver with password after 5 minutes of inactivity.
May the force be with you . . .

That “antivirus” is actually a virus itself that tries to scam you out of money. You need to use *real* antivirus to remove it. I recommend trying Malwarebytes.

A 40 GB hard drive is not big enough to partition 3 ways, you need a minimum of about 40 to use with XP, otherwise your paging file size and temporary storage really slow the machine. The battery seems to have failed physically.

Hold the power button until the power led turns completely off. Then restart. With Norton AntiVirus, if you can, uninstall or reinstall it because the installation wouldn`t be completed.

Question by Callabus: Do you ever get pop-ups using AVG antivirus? Is this another virus?! Help!!?
Hello. I have been battling a nasty virus on my laptop for a few weeks now. Worst came to worse and the last time it “attacked”, it disabled my Mcafee antivirus stuff, so the tech center at the Uni I go to installed AVG 2011 (since it’s free and a lot of kids on campus use it). They also turned on my Firewall (windows) and I primarily use Firefox, sometimes Google Chrome (but mainly Firefox). I went to an image on Google images and a seperate web browser popped up and a pop up said I was eligible for money or something like that. I immediatly clicked out of everything, closed my laptop (didn’t turn it off) opened it back on and waited to see if any more pop-ups came up, etc. Is this the virus attacking again or do you sometimes get pop-ups even using AVG? Also, if it is a virus, will AVG detect and put in the virus vault? Also, the people at the tech center said that when you turn on Windows Firewall, you sometimes get a lot of pop-ups saying that the webage isn’t safe, etc. Maybe that’s what it said and I just didn’t really read it? And also, my AVG updated yesterday morning, so it should be ok, right? Please don’t tell me “Get another anti virus program, that’s crap, get something else” I only would like positive answers that will help me. Thanks!
