Question by Wyatt’s mama: Ok.. computer virus problems! There’s a hacktool rootkit that my symantec keeps deleteing and xp anitvirus
2008 that I think, but am not sure, I got rid of.. My screensaver is gone, it now just says something about needing to download an antivirus cleaner to clean the computer..I have no idea where this virus came from or how I got it and no idea how to get rid of it.. Is it possible to get rid of it without buying top of the line antivirus cleaners or losing everything on my computer??? I’m a novice at this so I need detailed directions! It all started after I got this application on myspace about “own your friends”… could it have came from there? Also, windows firewall has asked twice if I wanted them to continue blocking a program (not sure what it was now).. So is this viruses or is someone trying to hack my computer??
remove Antivirus xp………unfortunantly I think it’s different for each computer infected.. I have found the virus under rhcaqqj0ee9v and blphcaqqj0ee9v.. and windows/system32/sysrest.sys..
However, your tactic does work the person just needs to figure out what the virus is hiding under which they can do if they have an antivirus system that picks up on a virus… My screen saver is back!!! YAY!!

Question by karibear: symantec scan problem????
i recently restored my computer back to a week ago, and when i did that my symantec antivirus corporate edition didn’t work properly…at first, i couldn’t update my virus files (aka Live Update) or scan my computer, but then i downloaded the live update off the symantec website, so now that works fine, but i STILL CAN”T SCAN MY COMPUTER.
and everytime i attempt to scan, a popup window says that it can’t access the scan engine and that i need to check if the product is installed.
HOW DO I DO THIS w/out USING THE CD (which i don’t have) AND DO I NEED TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING OFF THE WEBSITE? IF SO, WHAT?
PLS HELP!!!!!!!1

Answer by nascar24
it just sounds like you are going to have to uninstall the anti virus and then reinstall it. find the cd somewhere or download it from a website. sounds like the program is corrupted and only can be fixed with a reinstall. or try emailing nortan symantec for details they can help.

Question by Osafune: How do I fix Symantec Antivirus?
So, here’s the run down: I have Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition installed on my laptop. The other day, Live Update ran and Auto Protect did it’s usual thing of searching through quarantined files to see if anything could be fixed. While Auto Protect was running, I had an emergency I needed to take care of and I needed to leave in a hurry. Since I wasn’t at home at the time, I didn’t want to simply leave the thing running, but there was no way for me stop Auto Protect from running (the cancel and close buttons are always grayed out during this). So, I was left with no other choice but to simple shut the laptop down while it was running.
Now I’ve got a few problems with it. Every time I boot up my laptop, I get error messages saying “Symantec Antivirus has stopped working and was closed”, even though it still shows up in the task bar. Also, Live Update has stopped automatically searching for updates (I can still go in and manually open and run it, though). Windows says it’s an issue with Endpoint Protection.
I’ve tried uninstalling/reinstalling Symantec and performing a system restore, yet the same things still happen. Does anybody have any idea on how I can fix it? Normally I’d call customer support, though at this present time I’m at work and unable to.
I don’t think it’s Norton. No where on the program does it say “Norton Antivirus by Symantec” or anything like that. It’s simply Symantec Antivirus.

Symantec antivirus is too hard on system resources. I would recommend AVG’s products http://www.grisoft.com
