Question by Scoop111: I took my computer in for repair and they said it had a virus called Spector Pro. What is this? How to remove?
They wanted 9 to clear my system of that virus. I can’t find info about it online. Can someone tell me what it is? Is it dangerous? Can I get rid of it myself?

Spector Pro is spyware that someone installed on your PC, to spy on users. It monitors keystrokes, logs web pages used, chat conversations, passwords etc.

Someone intentionally installed program to spy on the users of the PC. It is not free.

Check for other un-install methods first, like such as that posted by PEACE! below. If you can just un-install it, that would be the easiest. But that might not be an option if you dont know the password.

Do a google search for: Spector Pro remove
I am blocked from many of those web sites by my providers filter. So I cant give more details. Be sure your turn on your fishing filter in IE7, and firewall before searching those sites.
Some of them may be hacked.
I have IE6 so I cant walk you through that, but it is easy.

One other more drastic way around the problem ( maybe), would be to check your system restore feature, and see if you can un-install the software by restoring the PC to an earlier configuration.

Any software that you installed after the selected restore date, would have to be re-installed. ( games, updates, security fixes, SPYWARE etc).
The restore feature, can be reversed, by re-running the tool.

in Xp:
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, system restore.
(*) Restore my computer to an earlier time.
Next
Then look at all of the available restore dates in the popup canendar. Try to choose a date before the spyware was installed, but not too far back. Then follow the prompts.

If you dont like the changes, just re-run the tool to undo the changes.

You might also consider Changing your password, and admin password, delete the other user accounts, and activate a screensaver with password after 5 minutes of inactivity.

May the force be with you . . .

That “antivirus” is actually a virus itself that tries to scam you out of money. You need to use *real* antivirus to remove it. I recommend trying Malwarebytes.

Norton is not a great antivirus. For free antiviruses try Avast, Kasperky free trial, and Sophos free trial – And also download Spybot – Search & Destroy, as this helps get rid of some types of Malware that the others won’t [pick up. Avast runs in the background, doing scheduled checks, and blocking Viruses in real time, as well as searching and removing others, but spybot I believe you have to do yourself

Question by Jack M: will buying an antivirus software such as Norton Antivirus remove spyware, adware and pop ups from my computer
My computer seems to be infected with spyware. The bar at the bottom sometimes disappear and reappear. I have done a saf scan with Microsoft but at the end the problem remains. Right after the problem appeared, a program offeing to fix it pops up, it’s called WinIFixer and recommends me to get it. I don’t know what to do I have been thinking of going and purchasing a antivirus software from the store, but will that help remove the problem?

Answer by Samuel Adams
Stay away from Norton and do not download anything that pops-up. You will need to get anti-virus and anti-spyware. I do not recommend Microsoft which you mention you are using.

NOD32 and Kaspersky are the best anti-virus applications and much better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (recent tests at av-comparatives.org). If you want a free anti-virus, AVG, Avast! or AntiVir all are better than Norton (install only 1).

No single anti-spyware application is perfect so I recommend using at least 2 different programs. Spybot Search & Destroy is one of the best. I also recommend SUPERAntiSpyware. Other free anti-spyware programs would be Adaware, AVG Anti-spyware (formally Ewido), A-squared, Spyware Terminator and SpywareBlaster.

I strongly recommend using FireFox, it’s a far better and safer alternative to Internet Explorer. If you add-on McAfee SiteAdvisor, it will warn you of potentially harmful sites. I also recommend CCleaner which is a free system optimization and privacy tool.

Q&A: How to remove Win 7 Internet Security 2011?

Question by Joyce Reed: How to remove Win 7 Internet Security 2011?
What antivirus should I use?

Best answer:

Answer by Mind Games
None right now. If you had a real one that really works you wouldn’t have this problem right now. But since you have it, Here is how to get rid of it. rkill to start, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill Keep trying till one of them downloads. They have been renamed on purpose. If you have a antivirus at all, exit it. Turn it off. Run rkill.DO NOT RESTART YOUR MACHINE. after you run rkill run malware bytes anti malware. http://www.malwarebytes.org/ This should clean it out. Restart your machine. Download a AV that works. Get Kaspersky internet security. Stay away from the “kiddy” free ones. They are for morons that don’t know any better. Especially AVG. You can’t get much worse.
