Is having spyware doctor & symantic security suite overkill?

My friend, a computer guy, sold me a laptop and put in for free lifetime subscriptions to spyware doctor & symantic. It seems one or the other is always running. Do I really need both? They take up a lot of disk space and seem to slow down my computer. Or should I keep both of them, considering they would ordinarily cost maybe $25 a year?

Norton is a known memory hog, I wouldn’t recommend you either of them, instead use a combination of:

AVG Free (real time) + MalwareBytes or SuperAntispyware.

That way you computer will be safe and fast.

Keep in mind that removing any Symantec software can be a real pain, so for that download a norton removal tool from the symantec website.

You should also remove unnecessary programs that start with windows, the safest way to do that is by running the “msconfig” tool in the Run application.

Start + Run + msconfig in Windows XP
Start and type msconfig in the “start search” input box for Vista.

You should use an antivirus program and antispyware software, because your computer is now infected with viruses and/or spyware.
