Does the free security software work just as well as paid security.?

Example: Mcafee vs. Avast.

    It does as well as some of them, but not as good as the top tier programs. Paid programs normally provide better protection because of the number of shields enabled.

    Of course comparing apples to oranges is silly, but many free programs actually outperform their paid counterparts. Buy the security software if you must, but I will stick to carefully selected free applications and never pay my hard-earned $ for another hyped application that does nothing more than strip the $ out of your pocket. I run AVG, Ad-Aware, A-squared Free, XoftspySE, and Spybot Search & Destroy and have NEVER had a virus or spyware that was able to evade detection and they are ALL FREE.     Free versions in my experience work just as well as paid for versions and can be much lighter on the system such as Norton and Mcafee which cost.

    That’s true of software in almost every other category as well.
