I’m partial toward Avast. Mainly because you can get it free! Or choose the advanced program for a fee.

It seems to catch most viruses (Home Version) and updates itself regularly.

Norton AV has issues as a memory hog and conflicts with other software if used on a network.

I’ve not tried Kaspersky, so I am not familiar with the pros and cons of it.

I can give you my opinion only of the programs I have used myself.
    Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 — very good — 8 out of 10
Bitdefender Total Security — very good — 8 out of 10
ESET Smart Security — excellent — 9 out of 10

I have now on my computer ESET Smart Security
Until a couple of months ago I had Bitdefender and a couple of months before that Kaspersky Internet Security. This one I had for over 6 months. but my registration was illegal and was black listed
I liked Kaspersky, but my favorite is ESET

When you want free protection . This is a way to do so

You can protect your computer very well with free programs. The best way is to use a combination of anti virus and anti spyware programs

    Anti virus and firewall pro

    or

    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
    in combination with

    Spywareblaster

Threatfire is an anti virus, that can be installed next to any other anti virus program on the same computer
    http://www.threatfire.com/

This is a very good program, that completely runs in the background
    http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html

    Anti spyware

Installing these programs, will not use any extra RAM or CPU usage.

you not compare a good antivirus like bitdefender with norton ,kaspersky or avast. bitdefender antivirus is in top 10 in the world. if you not pay for a good antivirus go to http://www.filehippo.com/download_bitdefender/, and try a free edition , click download the latest version and run this software .good luck !
