Question by Jojo: McAfee 2009 vs Avast vs Kaspersky vs anything else?
I just installed Windows 7 RC and I’m debating which security software I should install. I have been using McAfee for a while, its pretty good cept it’s a total resource hog and slows things down. I’ve heard about Avast and Kaspersky but haven’t really tried them. I do alot of downloading and p2p type things so I would think I need something solid. Putting money aside, which one offers the best security?
**Also I don’t really want to download 4 or 5 different programs, so an internet security suite would be nicer

i hate mcafee its so anoying makes my internet slow down when i scan for a virus

but beware of any free software website
make sure it’s the real deal before you download anything from anywhere..

Putting money ahead, AVG by Grisoft has one of the best FREE virus programs in creation. I’ve used it for years. I swear by it!
NORTON, IS THE BEST
Avira, BEST FREE anti virus program out there. Very Low Resources.
Kapersky is good too, and MCAfee is just garbage.
Security suites take up a lot of memory (such as Nortons) and bog down ur pc…they are not worth it….Its best to have at least 6 different progs:
2 Antivirus (Mcaffee and Trend Micro), 1 root kit remover ( Ad Aware SE by Lavasoft.com) and 2 pest / spy removers ( Pest Patrol and CCleaner) AND a Firewall ( Black Ice Defender or Zone alarm from zonelabs.com)
Each one of these u must do a custom configuration, and somewhere in their options u must check off to not let it do Automatic updates. Auto updates bogs down ur browsing.
You should do updates manually every 2 weeks.

McAfee is not very good.
The best anti-virus applications on the market today are (in no particular order):
- Kaspersky (Pay)
- Eset NOD32 (Pay)
- Avast! (Pay or Free versions)
- BitDefender (Pay of Free versions)
- Norton 2009 (Pay) Any older version is garbage, but they reworked it this year and it is nice and light and very accurate.
- Comodo’s new firewall with anti-virus is an excellent app. I am using it with Windows 7 right now and it is good, except for some false positives which aren’t a problem for me.
All the others are basically trash. Anyone who tells you that their favorite AV program is the best just because they “Haven’t had any viruses” is a fool. The truth is their virus detection kit is so poor that it can’t even tell they have a virus. That is not the same as not having a virus.
Anyone who uses anything other than the apps I listed above needs to download and scan their PC with Malwarebytes.org AntiMalware. DO IT NOW!!!

I think Avast! is by far the best free AV around. One should never rely on a single program or suite to handle all of their security. Use the Malwarebytes.org AntiMalware to scan once per week along with whatever active scanner you use and you should stay 99% clean.
Def go with KIS, Bitdefender, or Avira. KIS is pretty easy to use and amazing. It’s what I use.
