Avast 4 Home Edition Vs Active Virus Shield?

Question by Eclipse: Avast 4 Home Edition Vs Active Virus Shield?
Earlier i had posted a similar question, except I had also included AVG in the question. Don’t get me wrong AVG is a great free anti virus, but it doesn’t have as great of detection rates as these 2 free anti viruses. Avast doesn’t update as frequently as AVS, but has some features such as IM and P2P Shields, the boot scan, and that it can scan your computer when its on the screensaver. Which of the 2 uses slows your computer down the least, and which provides the better overall virus protection?

Best answer:

Answer by Jack_The_Bull
I have no experience with AVS, but what read about it now make me be live that it’s better.

Have only one antivirus program and one firewall installed on your computer.
Anti-adware/spyware are ok to have more of.
Some free good ones are Ad Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php and Spybot-S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Q&A: Anti virus software current detection rates?

Question by K_Alejandro: Anti virus software current detection rates?
I’ve been looking for info comparing the different anti-virus programs, but most of what Google turns up is 2004-2006 info… Considering that the virus world seems to run in 12 hour cycles or less, this is positively archaic info… I’m mostly interested in comparisons of the big three free vs the popular pay programs…

I’ve had considerable trouble with AVG lately and while I’m quite happy with the security provided for the last three years, there are a number of aspects I’m not too happy with anymore. AVG8 is not looking like it’s worth the trouble…

I’d love to find a website that regularly tests detection rates and keeps things updated…

I know David Lipman is considered highly in those circles, but I’ve not found anything of his since 2006… I have personal experience that Avast has moved forward quite a lot since then.

Anyone know of anything?
Uhm. Would appreciate it if instead of just giving me your individual opinions of specific anti-virus programs, you could help me answer the question I actually asked…

I asked if there is a website that shows detection rates for these different programs that is kept current.

I have a pretty wide range of experience with this stuff myself, but I don’t generally care to keep up to date with all of the different programs out there.

I generally just pick one that is the best and run with it for a couple of years until it starts to provide less than stellar service.

AVG 8 has a number of features that are less than desirable.
robert h – unless you are actually paying for macaffee, running a version installed from someone’s master disc is going to set you up with some pretty badly outdated virus definitions. If you don’t pay, they won’t update. That is dangerous. A fair bit more so than running something that has ‘less features’ because it is free.
racemaster – not sure if you mean that you run AVG8 and Avast one one computer or if you have them on separate computers, but if you have them both on one computer, this is extremely unwise.
Excellent.

Are those websites updated regularly? I want to find something that I can refer to others that is maintained regularly.

If this is all I get, I’m going to have a tough time choosing between #4 and #5 for best….
oops. the comparitive results site is updated regularly, albeit not frequently, should be good for a while.

PS. the links are broken since the site only allows links to the main site.

One click to ‘comparatives’ does the trick though.

Cheers!
kaspersky isn’t too bad, but it’s a bit of a slug. They use that on the computers at school and they all perform very slowly to the point that in order to get something done within the space of time of a class, I often have to just plain shut it down. I don’t want that kind of performance on my computer… too much work to do.

Incidentally, that AV comparitives site only compares the paid versions.

I’ve heard that there’s a big difference between the paid version of AVG and the non-paid, yet Avast uses the same engine for the free and paid versions.

I think for me, it’s up between antivir and Avast (gotta love that boot time scan)… still looking for a website that compares the free versions…

Thanks!

AVG VS. Avast VS. Avria VS. ANTI MALWARE Malwarebytes

Best answer:

Answer by The King
Malwarebytes is not an Anti-Virus program, it’s a Anti-Spyware program. Avast! 5 is the better of those three because AVG, how about we not go there? Avira is known for false positives and the update process fails a lot.

free avg vs avast?

Question by Evan D: free avg vs avast?
i heard its bad to have two resident scanners, so should i keep AVGfree, or AVAST
or u can say something better that is free

Best answer:

Answer by Brian F
It’s actually OK to have 2 scanners, just NOT to have them both running at the same time. Make sure ONE of the scanner’s “real-time protection” is turned off, then you can always use the other one to do an occasional full scan of the system to see if the other has missed something.

As to which one, try each (one at a time) with their real-time protection turned on and see which one slows your system down the least, turn the slower one off.

Microsoft SE vs Avira (free) vs Avast (free) vs AVG (free)?

Question by Spencer: Microsoft SE vs Avira (free) vs Avast (free) vs AVG (free)?
Which offers the best protection?

Best answer:

Answer by Nick Clark
Avast and AVG are both insane. Avast users will say to use Avast, while AVG users will tell you AVG is best.

I currently use AVG. I have no issues and it has protected me for a long time now.
I have not used Avast, but I’ll take people’s word that it is as good.

Both of the two are very like eachother–protection-wise–and you could go with either or.
