Question by Lady Arcana: Avira vs Avast Anti-Virus?
I’ve been an AVG fan for years, but lately, it doesn’t seem to be doing its job. Therefore, it’s time for new anti-virus software. I’m on a tight budget, so I was wondering, which would you prefer? Avira or Avast? Please explain why.

avast because it doesnt have a nag screen
in terms of quality from everything ive read they’re equivalent.

I dropped Norton after years of using it, and got Avast. I like it. Doesn’t use up much resources.

I use Avast. I was impressed becuase avast was able to get rid of the microsoftpro2008 virus that normally would crash a computer

If you want the best anti-virus program .. use KasperSky
if u want a program that won’t take a lot of RAM … use Avira-Anti-virus ..
Note that Avira has nothing to do with viruses after execution … it’s too weak to do that …
If you wanna get rid of a virus for real … take my advice and try KasperSky

My school used to offer Symantec EndPoint Protection for free to students but it doesn’t anymore. I downloaded it before, but I realized that it does take up a lot of resources. Would it be worth it to download a different free antivirus software with the risk of not being able to get Symantec EPP back?
If so, which do you think is better: Avast, Avira, or AVG
any opinions on Avira?

I would get rid of Symantec, all their software hog resources and don’t perform very well. I would go with Avast or AVG, have experience with both and both should work fine (don’t be startled by Avast, it talks to you, kinda creepy at first)

I don’t know who told you that but it isn’t true Avira Premium is one of the best. It was the anti-virus software of the year at av-comparatives Which is the top testing lab. It is always at the top or near the top in all the legit testing sites. It is a very good security program. Avast is also good for a free program. But it does not compare to Avira. Who ever told you Avast was better than Avira is someone you should not ask for security advise about computers. I don’t use Avira because I don’t like the interface and there are a few other things I don’t care for. But where it matters Protection it is strong,

I can add more details if you need, so let me know in your answer if you want more specs to compare to. I realize that there will be a speed difference just because of the lack of specs in the netbook.

Do you think that a netbook could handle my task just as well as my old laptop, or even better? Or if it is slower, is it slow enough to where I would be banging my head while I try to switch windows?

I am running a quick test now to see the RAM usage with a lot of these programs running.
Usually my laptop only uses 1.6 GB of ram though.
Here it is with all of those programs running at once: only about 2.1 GB…. I think I can find a netbook with that much RAM.
So I guess the main thing is the processor?

The netbook should be able to handle that with no problem, but just so you are aware netbooks no not have a cd/dvd drive if that is important for you to have then you better go with the laptop.

Just go for free Avast or Avira they are more than good enough for an average user.
Avg doesn’t detect certain types of virus (rootkits) so i would stay away from that.

Avira does updates in the background. It has a 90%+ detection rate while AVG and avast barely make 80%.
