Question by Akhilleus: Help choosing antivirus – Avast vs. AVG?
I’m looking to install new antivirus software. Currently I’m running both PC Tools Spyware Doctor AND NOD32, but both subscriptions run out soon. I’m looking for the best freeware and have narrowed it down to Avast and AVG. Does anyone have any opinions as to which of the two I should use (or, if not these two, another free antivirus program)?

BTW I’m running Windows XP on a laptop, so an antivirus that won’t eat all my resources would be awesome

Earlier i had posted a similar question, except I had also included AVG in the question. Don’t get me wrong AVG is a great free anti virus, but it doesn’t have as great of detection rates as these 2 free anti viruses. Avast doesn’t update as frequently as AVS, but has some features such as IM and P2P Shields, the boot scan, and that it can scan your computer when its on the screensaver. Which of the 2 uses slows your computer down the least, and which provides the better overall virus protection?

I recently had a problem on YA where it detected ‘unusual web traffic’ from my ISP. I checked my netstat and found a mess of stuff happening on 12080.

I discovered that this is related to the WebShield function of Avast (which I installed just half an hour ago after getting fed up with AVG).

I disabled that function and my netstat showed clean and I was able to post content to YA.

Is there any real benefit to running the WebShield?

Should I continue to run it, and just disable it when posting to Yahoo answers?

I have AVG 7.5 on my new laptop, I use my lap top for homework only and i want to TRY to keep it clean from spyware or viruses. I dont have a spyware protector and ive been looking up some. From what it seems Avast and Ad-Aware are the best. i want one that will remove trojan horses and not just detects them which one is best?
